Dadasaheb Phalke deserves a Mohanlal Award, not the other way around: Ram Gopal Varma

Bollywood director Ram Gopal Varma has congratulated Mohanlal on receiving the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest honour in the field of cinema. In a note shared on X (formerly Twitter), RGV praised Mohanlal, stating that instead of giving the Dadasaheb Phalke Award to Mohanlal, it would be more appropriate to give a “Mohanlal Award” to Dadasaheb Phalke.

"I don’t know much about #DadasahebPhalke except that he’s made the 1st ever film, which i dint see and I never met anyone who saw it , but from what I saw and know of @Mohanlal, I think Dadasaheb Phalke should be given the MOHANLAL AWARD," wrote Ram Gopal Varma.

In another post, he shared his views on greatness not being confined to the dead. "It’s not that the GREATS are only in the GONE ..There are many GREATS among the LIVING who are actually FAR GREATER than the GONE .. GONE cannot be neither an additional qualification nor an achievement .. So I think it’s high time that we honour the GONE GREATS by giving them awards named after the LIVING GREATS and thats when discrimination will truly end between the LIVING and the GONE," RGV added.

Ram Gopal Varma directed Mohanlal’s first Bollywood film, Company. Alongside Mohanlal, the film also starred Ajay Devgn, Vivek Oberoi, and Manisha Koirala in major roles. Released in 2002, Mohanlal played the role of an IPS officer in the film.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award was instituted by the Government of India in 1969 in memory of Dadasaheb Phalke, considered the father of Indian cinema. The first recipient of the award was actress Devika Rani. So far, the award has been conferred annually upon 54 individuals, with Mohanlal becoming the 55th recipient. Previous actor-recipients include Dilip Kumar, Sivaji Ganesan, Dev Anand, Shashi Kapoor, and Amitabh Bachchan.

It was legendary filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan who first brought the Dadasaheb Phalke Award to Malayalam cinema. He received the award for the year 2004, which was presented in 2005. It marked the first time in the award’s history since its inception in 1969, that a Malayali was honoured. The award for 2023 has now gone to Mohanlal.
